How to pray a novena when life feels tangled
How to Pray a Novena: Catholic Novenas for Healing, Protection & Hard Times
by Clare Donnelly
When someone you love is ill, money is tight, or a decision will not come clear, a novena gives the need somewhere to go. Clare Donnelly’s guide is a practical companion for nine days of prayer: name one intention, make room for it each day, and stay open to an answer you cannot control.

The guide begins with three decisions
Small enough to make on a difficult evening, which is the point.
One
Choose one concrete intention
Recovery, employment, reconciliation or guidance. Ask for it without demanding exactly how or when an answer must come.
Two
Pick a time and a place you can keep
Sustainable beats ideal. If your schedule is irregular, tie the prayer to something that already happens each day.
Three
Keep a tally of the days
A simple record turns nine days into something you can see, and makes a missed day easier to pick up again.
What this book explores
Six concerns, one way of praying
The subjects below come from the book’s own description. Each one is approached the same way: a specific need, a realistic rhythm, and no promise that prayer works like a formula.
01
Beginning without performing
What a novena is, why nine days, and the three practical decisions the guide starts with: one concrete intention, a sustainable time and place, and a tally of the days. It assumes distraction and interruption rather than flawless devotion.
02
Healing, for patients and caregivers
Devotions associated with Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Peregrine and St. Raphael, with room for the person who is ill, the person caring for them, and the loved ones watching from a distance. Healing is treated as something that does not always mean a cure.
03
Protection with courage and judgment
St. Michael and St. Benedict appear in an approach that asks for God’s care, courage and sound judgment, rather than invulnerability or a charm against harm.
04
Family, work and money
Household concerns, strained relationships, pregnancy and loss, employment and financial pressure are brought into prayer, while the guide makes space for practical help alongside it.
05
Hard times and lost things
Devotions associated with St. Rita, Mary Undoer of Knots, St. Dymphna, St. Jude and St. Anthony, including prayer for lost direction or a faith that has grown thin.
06
Interruptions and unanswered prayer
What to do after a missed day, when prayer feels empty, or when the answer is not the one you hoped for. The guide treats none of these as a failed test of devotion.
Why a reader would choose it
A devotional guide with its feet on the ground
The perspective is consistent throughout: prayer belongs alongside responsible action, not in place of it. That single conviction shapes how the guide handles illness, danger, money and disappointment.
A novena gives you a way to return to God with a particular need, even through distraction, uncertainty and interrupted routines.
It starts with one concrete intention
Not a list of everything wrong in your life. One need, named plainly, so nine days of prayer has a centre you can return to each evening.
It fits a real week
The guide suggests a sustainable time and place, and for irregular schedules it links prayer to a daily event rather than a fixed hour. A tally keeps the days visible when routine breaks down.
It keeps the saints in their place
Saints are presented as companions in prayer, not substitutes for God. Asking a friend to pray for you is the comparison the guide uses. Their associations with particular needs are guides, not guarantees.
It keeps prayer beside action
Protection may mean leaving an unsafe place, setting a boundary or asking for assistance. Prayer about work and money can sit beside an application, a budget review or a call for help. Trust does not require passivity.
Who it is for
Readers carrying something particular
This is a book for ordinary, interrupted prayer. It does not assume theological training, a quiet house, or a long stretch of free time.
- You have been given a novena to pray and are not sure how to start.
- Someone you love is ill, and you want words for the waiting.
- You are the caregiver, and the prayer needs to fit in the margins of the day.
- Money is tight, work is uncertain, or a household is under strain.
- A relationship needs repair, or a loss has left you without a way to pray.
- You want a simple structure for nine days, not a long devotional programme.
Reader questions
Short answers first
Four questions readers bring to this book, answered from the guide’s own description and, where noted, the biblical text it points to.
The full how-to guideWhat does Clare Donnelly's novena guide cover?
A practical nine-day prayer guide for specific needs. How to Pray a Novena explains what a novena is, how to begin one, and how to keep going. It covers devotions associated with healing, protection, family and money worries, hard times and lost direction, plus a calendar of fixed-date and movable-feast devotions, including Christmas and Holy Spirit novenas.
It also addresses the awkward parts: a missed day, prayer that feels empty, and an answer you did not want. See how to pray a novena for the structure it recommends.
How are saints different from God in Catholic prayer?
Saints are companions in prayer, not substitutes for God. The guide makes the distinction with a familiar comparison: asking a friend to pray for you. You are not praying to the friend instead of God; you are asking for their company and their prayers.
It also treats a saint’s association with a particular need as a guide rather than a guarantee. That is why the book can name devotions for healing or protection without promising a cure or safety.
How do Mary and the disciples relate to novenas?
The nine days echo the waiting between Ascension and Pentecost. The guide connects nine-day prayer with the biblical image of Mary and the disciples waiting in prayer after the Ascension, as described in Acts 1:12–14.
The passage itself does not prescribe a novena. It describes a community at prayer. The nine-day pattern is later devotional practice read alongside that scene, and the book presents it that way: a scriptural image to pray with, not a rule handed down in the text.
Does feeling nothing mean a novena has failed?
No. A lack of emotion is not a measure of faithfulness. The guide is explicit that feeling nothing does not mean failure, and that an unwanted outcome is not proof your faith was inadequate.
You can resume after an interruption, and restarting is optional. The same care shapes the harder circumstances: protection may include leaving an unsafe place or asking for help, and trust does not require tolerating harm.
